Hazare supporters may remain in jail till Monday

Five Indian men arrested for organising a protest march in Dubai could be granted bail after Eid.

The lawyer who is representing the arrested men told ‘Emirates24|7′ that the reason why the bail was rejected the first time was because the case was still under investigation.

The march was organised in support of social activist Anna Hazare, who ended his 290-hour long fast this morning in India after the Indian parliament passed a resolution accepting his demands for a strong anti-corruption law.

The men were arrested following a march at Al Mamzar beach on August 20.

The legal team representing the arrested men yesterday denied reports that more people have been detained.

“So far only five Indian men are in police custody. Although police are investigating and looking into the role of more people, there has not been any arrests made,” said Aashik T K of Universal Legal Associates.

“The issue is very sensitive. They have been booked under organising illegal protest against the state. It is being taken very seriously especially in the background of various protests across the globe,” he said. The march was organised through Facebook.

In January 2009, several Iranians had protested outside the Iranian consulate in Dubai to express their support for Mir Hossein Mousavi who was pitted against president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the presidential race.

Police had then issued a strict warning against those involving in protests.
